Harana...dalaw...ligaw... kasal...
(A foto taken at Villa Escudero. Before when a gentleman wants to win the heart of a lady, he would visit and serenade her at her house. These days they would just go to a mall or videoke bars. When the lady likes the guy (and that of her parents as well) what follows is a church wedding. Everyone would shout: Long live the newly wed! So everyone will get a chance to "sip a hot soup" [Filipino idiom referring to marriage]).
As a young boy growing up in the 70's and 80's I have fond memories of those wedding I attended in our province in Ilocos Norte. I plan to write lengthily on this.

Heee, the serenade is so Latin! How did that custom begin? Is it native to the Philippines or was it introduced from somewhere?

(To morning angel - I believe harana was brought to my country by the Spaniards but like any other imported traditions it had its own unique and Filipino-ness when it gets adapted as part of the local custom.)
